Beyond the major thin-client platforms there is a long tail of alternatives: Linux endpoint operating systems, kiosk browser software, and lockdown or MDM platforms. Here is where each one genuinely fits, and where XPC differs — in one page, without the marketing.

The short answer

What are the alternatives to XPC, and how do they differ?

Most alternatives to XPC fall into three groups. Linux endpoint operating systems — HP ThinPro, Praim ThinOX4PC, Stratodesk NoTouch, ClearCube Cloud Desktop OS and ChipPC ThinX OS — replace Windows on the device, so Windows management, RMM, endpoint security, drivers and peripheral support all change with it. Kiosk browser software such as SiteKiosk and KioWare locks down a web browser rather than presenting a remote desktop session. Lockdown and MDM platforms such as SureLock and Scalefusion apply device policy but are not remote-access shells. XPC sits in a different place again: Windows-native software that keeps the Windows build, tooling and drivers you already have, and presents one locked, brandable screen that launches the approved Citrix, RDP, AVD, Windows 365 or other remote desktop session.

Linux endpoint operating systems

These products convert a PC or thin client into a managed Linux access endpoint, administered from the vendor's own management server. Several are offered specifically as a way to repurpose existing x86 hardware.

The shared trade-off. Windows is removed from the endpoint. That is the point of the category — and it is also what makes it a project. Your Windows RMM, endpoint security agent, print and peripheral drivers, line-of-business device support and any Windows-native agents no longer apply to that device, and the team needs to run and support a second endpoint platform alongside the Windows estate.

HP ThinPro (and ThinPro PC Converter)

HP's Linux-based thin-client operating system, with a PC Converter option that installs ThinPro onto existing x86 PCs.
What happens to Windows
Windows is replaced by ThinPro on the endpoint.
How XPC differs
XPC installs onto the Windows build you already manage rather than converting the device to another operating system, so nothing about the underlying Windows estate changes.
Choose them instead when
You want an HP-supported Linux endpoint OS and are standardising on HP's management tooling.

Praim ThinOX4PC

Praim

What it is
Praim's Linux thin-client OS packaged to be installed onto existing PCs, managed with Praim's own management software.
What happens to Windows
Windows is replaced by ThinOX4PC on the endpoint.
How XPC differs
XPC is Windows-native software, so Windows patching, security tooling and driver support stay exactly where they are today.
Choose them instead when
You have decided to move endpoints to Linux and want Praim's endpoint management stack with it.

Stratodesk NoTouch

Stratodesk (now part of IGEL)

What it is
A Linux endpoint OS and management platform long used to repurpose PCs and thin clients into VDI endpoints.
What happens to Windows
Windows is replaced by NoTouch on the endpoint.
How XPC differs
Stratodesk is now part of IGEL, so this decision is in practice the IGEL comparison — the same Windows-versus-Linux endpoint question, at platform scale.
Choose them instead when
You are already invested in NoTouch or IGEL and want to consolidate endpoints onto that platform.

ClearCube Cloud Desktop OS

ClearCube

What it is
ClearCube's thin-client operating system for its zero and thin-client hardware and VDI endpoints.
What happens to Windows
Windows is replaced on the endpoint.
How XPC differs
XPC does not require particular endpoint hardware or a vendor OS — it runs on the Windows PCs already in service.
Choose them instead when
You are buying ClearCube endpoint hardware and want the matching vendor OS and management.

ChipPC ThinX OS

What it is
A thin-client operating system with its own central management, aimed at ChipPC and repurposed endpoints.
What happens to Windows
Windows is replaced on the endpoint.
How XPC differs
With XPC there is no second endpoint platform to run: the portal only governs the XPC experience, not the device build.
Choose them instead when
You want a low-footprint vendor-managed thin-client OS across a standardised fleet.

Kiosk browser software

These products lock a Windows device into a controlled web browsing experience — public terminals, digital signage, self-service screens and web-app kiosks.

The shared trade-off. They solve a browser problem, not a remote desktop problem. If the job is to present a published Citrix, RDP, AVD or Windows 365 session as the user's working environment, a kiosk browser is not the tool that does it.

These platforms restrict what a device can do and enforce configuration centrally, usually across mixed fleets that include Android and Windows.

The shared trade-off. Policy enforcement and remote access presentation are different problems. A lockdown or MDM platform can restrict the device; it does not give the user a purpose-built, brandable screen whose job is to get them into the right remote desktop session and keep them there.
