Should you replace Windows on the endpoint?
Thin-client operating systems are good products solving a real problem. The question is whether the problem you have actually requires one — because the cost of change lands on your team, not the vendor's.

Should I replace Windows with a thin-client operating system?
Replace Windows when the endpoint OS itself is the problem: you want an immutable, minimal, non-Windows device, you are standardising a large fleet on one vendor's platform, and you are prepared to run its management suite as a second operating model. Keep Windows when the problem is really the user-facing desktop — when you need Windows drivers, peripherals, agents and application compatibility, when your estate is mixed, or when you cannot justify a migration project to achieve a simpler screen. Replace the OS when…
There are estates where a purpose-built thin-client operating system is genuinely the better architecture.
- You want an immutable, minimal, read-only endpoint with a small attack surface.
- The fleet is large, standardised and bought from one vendor.
- You are willing to run the vendor's management suite as your endpoint platform.
- Peripheral and application needs are simple and already on the vendor's compatibility list.
Keep Windows when…
For many organisations the endpoint OS was never the problem in the first place.
- You depend on Windows drivers, specialist peripherals or locally installed agents.
- The estate is mixed hardware accumulated over years or through acquisition.
- Your team's skills, tooling and runbooks are all Windows-based.
- You need the change to be reversible, quickly, without a bench visit.
Count the whole cost, not the licence
Migration effort is where these decisions are won and lost: hardware qualification, driver and peripheral retesting, imaging, a second console, new runbooks, service-desk retraining, a pilot, a rollback plan and the project management around all of it. Where XPC would tell you to look elsewhere
If you have already committed to a Linux endpoint platform, if the security requirement is specifically an immutable non-Windows device, or if you are buying new dedicated thin clients anyway, a purpose-built thin-client OS is the more coherent answer and we would say so.

A simpler screen should not require a platform migration to obtain.
If the desktop is the problem, change the desktop. If the operating system is the problem, change the operating system.

Is a thin-client OS more secure than Windows with XPC?
An immutable Linux endpoint has a smaller attack surface by design. A Windows endpoint running XPC keeps your existing hardening, patching and endpoint security stack, which for most estates is the control set auditors already accept.
Does keeping Windows mean keeping Windows licensing?
Yes. Devices retain the Windows licences and support arrangements they already have.
What is the fastest way to test the difference?
