Install the XPC agent on the Windows PCs the school already owns and enable XPC Mode. The PC boots into a branded XPC screen showing only the remote sessions and tools the school publishes, instead of the full Windows desktop. Windows, the school's existing imaging, antivirus and management tooling all stay exactly as they are, so there is no operating system migration and no hardware refresh to fund.

School PC estates are usually a mix of ages, bought across different budget cycles. XPC does not care: it runs on the Windows PCs you already own and shifts the workload to the remote session, so an ageing lab machine still delivers a clean, fast experience. Students see the lesson, not the operating system

The XPC screen shows exactly what the school publishes — the remote desktop, the learning platform, the exam environment. Students cannot browse the local file system, install software or reconfigure the machine, so lessons start on time and lab machines stay in the state the teacher left them.

Holiday reimaging effort, mostly avoided

Because the endpoint is a launcher and the work happens in the session, drift on the local machine matters far less. Changes to what students can reach are made centrally in the XPC Cloud Portal rather than by walking the labs with a USB stick during the break.

Straight answers.

Do we have to replace Windows on the lab PCs?

No. XPC runs on Windows. The operating system, your imaging process, antivirus and device management all stay in place — XPC only changes what the student sees when the machine starts.

Can teachers still get a normal desktop on the same machine?

Yes. XPC Mode is enabled per PC from the XPC Cloud Portal, so a staff machine can be left as a standard Windows desktop while lab machines run in XPC Mode.

Does it work for exam or assessment environments?

XPC restricts the endpoint to the sessions and tools you publish, which suits controlled assessment settings. Exam-specific rules still come from your assessment platform or the remote session policy.

What about printing and USB devices in the lab?

Because Windows is still underneath, printers, scanners and USB peripherals continue to work through the normal Windows drivers and your remote client's redirection settings.
